Caribbean Folk Songs: Resources from our London Workshops

From May to the end of July 2025, CeCelia and Colin Anderson – better known as award-winning Choir Directors, ‘Ethno Vox’ – led a series of workshops in Caribbean Folk Singing for our TURNING POINT programme in London.

The workshops enabled our participants (all of them, members of Caribbean Social Forum) to sing together for the first time; learning and rehearsing a programme of familiar Caribbean songs, along with scarcely known songs featured in our period drama TURNING POINT. Through Ethno Vox’ inspirational leadership and musical arranging artistry, a new choir was born.

TURNING POINT’s sound design features Sweet Patootee Arts’ original interpretation of the unique and deeply poignant “Barbados Slaves Work Song” (c. 1780). A performance of this Unesco World Heritage folk song is included among the video resources below. You can also listen to Sweet Patootee Arts’ version of the song on our resource page here

Ethno Vox inspire and lead community choirs, gospel groups, professional performances, recitals, and workshops across the UK. Their workshops for TURNING POINT’s London programme culminated in a heart-melting debut concert by the newly formed Caribbean Social Forum Choir – marking Emancipation Day (1st August 2025) in fine style at London’s iconic Tramshed Arts Centre. The songs learned over the course of Ethno Vox’ workshops were performed to a packed audience who were deeply moved by the show. We are now sharing our video recordings of this remarkable debut concert here, for those interested in learning more about Caribbean Folk Songs and hearing how they sound.

Below, you can choose to view our movie of the full concert (duration 1 hr 10-mins). Or a short movie of each song being performed…
