Jennifer Laurent-Smart, founder of Sakafet London, led six Black Heritage Research and Sewing Skills workshops. These workshops included:
- Co-creating items of historic clothing relevant to ordinary working class people of colour, and their communities in Britain and the Caribbean in the 1920s and 1930s.
- Researching clothes worn in 1920 and 1930s London and the Caribbean, the themes of Black pride, self-esteem, and importance of wearing your ‘Sunday best’.
Participants with an interest in Black history and fashion, joined the workshop series and collaborated in making some beautiful dresses.
This creative heritage activity was inspired by our period drama TURNING POINT – and Jennifer’s extensive knowledge of Caribbean fashion and heritage.
