Hibiscus Community Centre dancers perform at Sadler’s Wells East for Get Into Dance

Leo Shire

Choreographer Nicholas Norman has been delivering dance workshops at Hibiscus Community Centre with Caribbean elders in collaboration with Sweet Patootee Arts. In this event, they presented a dance piece based on TURNING POINT, which honours the Black Caribbean experience at the turn of the 20th century — a powerful blend of storytelling, history and movement.

Get Into Dance is a festival which shines a spotlight on the power of dance to bring people together, improve wellbeing and celebrate identity. This festival showcases the work of dance classes taking place in community centres across East London at Sadler’s Wells East.

The Hibiscus Community Centre dancers who took part were wearing costumes designed by Sakafet London, who led the Sunday Best sewing workshops as part of our TURNING POINT London programme. It was a beautiful collaboration of skills and a celebration of community.
